Section 504 and FAPE

What is a FAPE?

Section 504 is a Civil Rights law that is meant to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities.

It requires school districts provide a FAPE to each student with a disability.

A 504 plan is something a school will implement as a way of documenting that they recognize a student;

1. Has a disability.

2. Requires accommodations in order to "access" their education - so that they may receive a FAPE.

So, now you know......

What should it say?

A 504 document should outline each accommodation the student needs in order to access their FAPE. Visual Aids, Preferential Seating, Extended Time, Check for Understanding, and Redirection are common examples.

BUT WAIT!!
What if the student needs MORE than a 504???
